We are reading through the Big Picture Story Bible in our Followers after school program and we came to the story of Jesus turning over the tables of the money changers and those selling animals in the Temple (John 2). We wanted a fun craft to go along with the story and we found an idea that worked really well and was lots of fun.

How to Make “The Whip” Craft

This is an incredibly simple craft to make. You’ll need a straw, 4-6 strands of yarn, and some tape. Cut the yarn to semi-equal lengths and then tape them to the straw…

Voila! You’ve got a homemade whip! When you “whip” it, it really sounds like a whip!

I know what you’re thinking… you had your elementary students make whips! Yep, we did. We did not, however, let the students whip each other. Prior to making the craft we informed them what we were making and told them they were not allowed to hit each other with them. What really helped is both that we addressed the issue up front and we made them place it directly into their backpack for when they got home instead of carrying it around the rest of the afternoon. We told them that when they got home they should show their parents what they made and what the story was about.
